14 Best Fixes for Microsoft Store Won’t Download Games/Apps

Microsoft Store (previously Windows Store) has become a one-stop destination for all games and app installation. However, as with all things Windows 10 and 11, many users are not able todownload gamesand apps from Microsoft Store for one reason or another. Here’s what to do when Microsoft Store doesn’t download games and apps on Windows 10 or 11 PC.

1. Before You Begin

Some common reasons why you may not be able to download apps or games from Microsoft Store and what you’re able to do about it.

2. Sign In

You need a Microsoft account to be able to download apps and games from Microsoft Store. Microsoft did allow some free apps to be downloaded by local account users, but that is no longer possible. Now, all downloads require you to have a Microsoft account. If you don’t have an account,simply create one. You can also create an Outlook email account and use that to access Microsoft Store.

3. Sign Back In

Unlike the above method, this is a simple yet effective troubleshooting step to try if Microsoft Store is stuck on downloading apps or games.

1.Press theWindows keyon your keyboard and search for and open Microsoft Store.

2.Click on yourprofile photoin the upper right corner of the screen and then select theSign outoption.

3.Now repeat the same steps and click on Sign in option and then follow the on-screen instructions to sign in to Microsoft Store using your Microsoft account. Note that if you have enabled 2FA, you will need to enter the code.

While Microsoft Store hosts a number of apps that you can install and update in the background, that’s not the only way. Long before Store, Windows users simply downloaded the .exe or executable file of the app and installed it manually. 5. Update Installed Apps/Games

Microsoft Store won’t download new apps and games if it is busy updating existing ones on your Windows 10/11 computer. Be patient and let it do its job. In fact, we recommend you update all apps first before trying again.

To do so, simply open Store and click on theLibraryicon in the lower left sidebar, and then click on theGet updatesbutton.

Now try again and see if Store is downloading new apps and games or not.

6. Clear Store Cache

Cache files help apps reload and function smoothly and faster. But it may also cause issues. Let’s clear Store’s cache files to see if that helps. Doing so won’t delete any data.

1.PressWindows+Ito open Settings. Click onAppsin the left sidebar and selectInstalled appson the right.

2.Search forStore using the search bar. When Store appears, click on thekebab menu (three-dot icon), and selectAdvanced options.

3.Scroll a little to find theResetbutton. Click on it.

Doing so will delete Store’s cache files saved on Windows.

You can also use thewsreset.exe command in the Command Promptto clear the Microsoft Store cache.

7. Clear Local Cache Folder

Some cache files are stored in the local cache folder. Try deleting them to fix Microsoft Store not downloading apps and games on Windows 11.

1.PressWindows+Rto open the Run prompt. Copy-paste the below command and hit Enter.

2.A new file explorer window will open. Navigate to the folder structure below.

Select everything inside this folder(Ctrl+A)and delete it(Del).

8. Repair Store App

This function will try and fix Microsoft Store. Simply go back toSettings > Apps > Store Advanced optionsand click on theRepairbutton. You will find it in the same menu where you reset the app in the above method.

9. Run Windows Store Troubleshooter

Windows 10 and 11 OS comes with a set of troubleshooters that help solve some common and known problems. There is one for Microsoft Store that may help resolve bugs that are preventing Store from downloading apps and games.

1.ReopenSettings(press Windows+I) and search forFind and fix problems with Windows Store Apps. Click to open it.

Note:While Microsoft has renamed Windows Store to Microsoft Store, the name still appears in some places within the Windows OS.

2.In the pop-up that follows, click onNextand follow the on-screen instructions after that.

3.Now run theFind and fix problems with Windows Updatetroubleshooter.

10. Reinstall Microsoft Store

Like all Windows apps, you can reinstall Microsoft Store to remove any inconsistent and buggy files.

1.Press the Windows Start button and search forCMD. Now selectRun as administratoroption.

2.Copy-paste the command below and pressEnterto execute it.

Let it finish running.

11. Re-Register Microsoft Store

If resetting Microsoft Store doesn’t work and it is still not installing apps and/or games, try re-registering it on Windows OS.

1.Re-open CMD (Command Prompt) with admin rights as you did in the previous step.

2.Copy-paste the command below and run it.

3.Wait for the command to finish running and then reboot your computer.

12. Restart Windows Explorer

Save all open work before you do this as it will close all open apps and windows.

1.Press theCtrl+Shift+Esckeys to open the Task Manager.

2.Right-click onWindows Explorerand select theRestartoption from the context menu.

The screen may blink a few times. Wait a few moments and then check if Microsoft Store still won’t download apps and games or not.

13. Restart Windows Update Service

1.Press theWindows Start menuicon and search for PwerShell. Then open it withadmin rights.

2.Copy-paste the commands below, one at a time, and execute them. Again, one at a time.

Reboot your computer once all the commands have finished running to check if Microsoft Store is allowing downloading apps and games or not.

14. Integrity Check

Microsoft has a long list of what they call theIntegrity Checkfor the Windows operating system. It is too big to cover here and deserves a separate post. If nothing else worked and Microsoft Store still won’t download apps and games, try these.
