With thousands of films coming out every year, it’s easy to miss some absolute gems, so here are six movies you’ve slept on (but really should watch)… Some are lesser-known features, others simply missed out on due to what was released around them, but all are good in one way or another, and worth your time.
Moon (2009)
Directed by Duncan Jones and starring Sam Rockwell,Moonfollows the solitary astronaut as he works around his lunar station, with his only companion in his computer Gertie. A simple enough premise with a solid story over its runtime, I won’t say any more for fear of ruining it, but give it a watch, I guarantee you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

The Fountain (2006)
Darren Aronofsky directed this film featuring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz playing multiple characters over three separate timelines. The three timelines have one thing in common, in that the principal characters within are attempting to find the tree of life for their own reasons, be it selfish or otherwise. In typical Aronofsky style, this film is equal parts philosophical, and absolutely horrific with one scene in particular, and it’ll also have you getting introspective pretty quick once it’s finished. Not his best work, but not far off.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)
Starring Robert Downey Jr. before his Hollywood redemption arc, this is a personal favorite of mine. A black comedy that follows RDJ’s character from being a petty criminal trying to steal his kid a toy for Christmas, to happening upon a Hollywood casting, and then ending up in the middle of a murder mystery story that keeps twisting and turning in odd ways. If only for the witty banter between Downey and Val Kilmer, give this a watch.
In Bruges (2008)
Another black comedy on the list of six movies you’ve slept on (but really should watch),In Bruges,follows two hitmen after a hit gone wrong on their trip to Bruges. Framed as sort of a retreat in their downtime whilst they wait to hear from their boss, Colin Farrell carries the film with his perfect mixture of self-deprecating humor, charm, and introspective guilt, and Brendan Gleeson isn’t too shabby in it either.

Primer (2004)
A time travel movie that won’t hold your hand as you watch it, you’ll want to verify you put your phone down and pay full attention with this one. By the end of the film, you’ll be confused, amazed, and probably need to re-watch it, if for no other reason than to catch a lot of the multi-layered story you’ll have missed on your first watch. All the more impressive is the fact this was made on a measly $7,000 budget.
You’re Next (2011)
The last of the movies you’ve slept on (but really should watch), and it’s a complete change-up in genres compared to the earlier ones. A home invasion film with a twist of sorts, the film doesn’t pull any of its punches. From the opening scene you know you’re in for a treat, with some inventive kills, a good soundtrack that appears in the most memorable moments, and a Home Alone-esque trap setting of the house, it’s definitely a film that has its fingerprints on some later films, includingHushandReady or Not.
There are plenty of films that could be included in this list, and in a way I hope most reading this have seen the majority of what’s included, however, I’m betting that’s not the case. Instead of watching the latest release this weekend, take your pick and watch one of the films included here on this list of six movies you’ve slept on (but really should watch)…
