20 years later, gamers celebrateCall of Duty’slegacy and what the future holds for the franchise. Now that Microsoft and Activision Blizzard are officially working together, theCall of Dutycommunity has a lot to look forward to.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3arrives on August 08, 2025, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Before its launch, Activision takes a moment to celebrate the franchise.
Call of Duty’s Vision to Be a Unique FPS Experience Still Holds Up
For generations, first-person games have been an outlet for many gamers to truly immerse themselves in the experience. Be it shooting and action games likeCall of Duty,or puzzle-solvers likeHalf-LifeandPortal, first-person games have been an important part of the video game industry. Furthermore,Call of Dutyhas, in many ways, pioneered how gamers experience the genre through different games.
This month is a celebration of the franchise’s 20th anniversary. With over 400 million copies sold through 20 different titles,Call of Dutymerely started as a competition to the famousMedal of Honorgames. The earlierCall of Dutygames emerged as an attempt to illustrate the brutalities of stories of World War and put players on a battlefield with cinematic pieces and mission-based gunplay.

On theirofficial blog, Activision has crafted a nostalgic trip that bringsCall of Duty’stimeline to life:
Made possible by world-class developers and an incredible community, the Call of Duty franchise will turn 20 on August 17, 2025. This recap provides an overview of the unprecedented, unbelievable, and unparalleled video game experiences across two remarkable decades.

The first game, which came out in 2003, introduced the world to Infinity Ward’s vision of an action-adventure first-person shooter. It had 24 Campaign missions, where players took on the role of Private Marting of the US 101st Airborne Division. The narrative also included characters like Alexei and Sergeant Evans. And, the instantly-recognisable Captain Price was introduced to players for the first time.
How Microsoft May Affect the Game’s Legacy
Activision Blizzard may have experimented (a lot) with the games and where they have been going, narrative-wise, but under Microsoft’s leadership, there’s a chance things may change. For better or worse? Only time will tell.
In the meantime, there’s no denying that millions of players enjoy the franchise and there’s a low chance any ‘competitor’ will come close to reliving the kind of legacy the game is leaving behind. According toSky News, there are roughly 250 million gamers who enjoyCall of Duty. Out of those, around a million players admit that they play nothing else.

According to Piers Harding-Rolls, the research director at Ampere Analysis:
It is obviously up there with some of the biggest intellectual properties within the game space. I think lifetime revenue from the series of games is over $30bn. You compare that with any other entertainment property, and it’s out there with some of the biggest.
The recent $69 billion deal between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard shook things up for the authorities as they had a hard time piecing together the future of the games industry, in the context of popular franchises likeCall of Duty.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) only gave a go-ahead to the deal once Microsoft reworked the merger’s terms and allowed a more open-ended future for publishing and making games. Especially how cloud gaming and future gaming would affect things. Under a changed leadership and newer vision(s) being added to the franchise, gamers can expect titles to be more accessible and experiment with new directions and gameplay styles.
While there’s no official information about the game coming to Xbox Game Pass, gamers can expectCall of Dutygames to make their way to subscription service, along with other popular titles from Activision Blizzard.
