Every superhero character in the Marvel Universe is unique in their own way, with their peculiar talent, power, and outlook. But Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel is the one character that stands out of the box because of the way she was created by Kelly Sue DeConnick.
Although Kelly Sue DeConnick gave Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel an attitude of her own, mixed with a distinguished personality; there’s a story behind how the character was actually created. Apparently, Carol Danvers is an amalgamation of two major MCU heroes – Tony Stark and Steve Rogers.

How Kevin Feige And Kelly Sue DeConnick Created Captain Marvel?
The creation of every Marvel superhero has a story of its own, but Captain Marvel’s development is quite fascinating. According toMCU: Reign of Marvel Studios,Kelly Sue DeConnick revealed how she almost quit her job after Marvel announced making a movie about Captain Marvel. But unfortunately, while she was done with Carol Danvers, the character wasn’t.
Kelly Sue DeConnick recalled how she was called for a meeting withKevin Feige, Mary Livanos, and Jonathan Schwartz to discuss Captain Marvel in LA. For a couple of hours, DeConnick tried explaining the base of Carol Danvers’ character to her hierarchy.
“The thing about Carol is she always gets back up.’ Kevin was like, ‘No, that’s Cap.’ He even says that: “I could do this all day,” right?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, but it’s Carol,’ but I didn’t articulate the difference very well, which bothered me.”
Eventually, Kelly Sue DeConnick realized the differences and the similarities between the characters ofBrie Larson‘s Captain Marvel and Chris Evans’ Captain America.
“The difference is, Steve gets back up because it’s the right thing to do. Carol gets back up-well, the thing I say has a curse word in it, which Disney loves-but Carol gets back up because f*ck you. Carol gets up not because it’s righteous or just, but because she’s full of piss and vinegar.”

Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel Is Inspired From Two Major MCU Heroes
Realizing the differences and similarities, Kelly Sue DeConnick returned home and wrote a long email based on her theory of how classic cinematic triangles worked. She figured out how most characters in the history of book adaptation originated as an amalgamation of two major characters. Taking examples from a few book-based characters, DeConnick composed the email for Marvel Studios.
“Kirk is Spock plus McCoy. Harry is Ron plus Hermione. Luke is Han plus Leia. That’s the formula. And Carol is Steve plus Tony. She’s got Tony’s spunk and swagger and she knows how to flip a wrench, but she’s also a soldier like Steve is and she has that sense of duty.”
Taking inspiration from two major MCU heroes,Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark andChris Evans‘ Steve Rogers, Kelly Sue DeConnick offered the idea to Kevin Feige via email. And thereafter, Marvel ended up keeping her on retainer while they made the movie. Contacting her whenever they needed help with the character, DeConnick became an important person in the creation of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel.
Later on, after the character was created and actors were hired, Marvel faced the issue of hiring directors for the movie. Figuring out whether or not to use a female director for the woman-led movie, the Studio heads wondered if it was time to think about diversity or find the best suitable for the job. But eventually, things got sorted and they hired Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to direct the 2019 movie.
