Next season of Marvel’sAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.will be adding a familiar face. FandomWire has learned that Hayley Atwell will be reprising her of Peggy Carter for the seventh and final season ofAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Atwell last portrayed the character in this summers mega-blockbuster,Avengers: Endgame, where she shared a long-awaited dance with the star-spangled man, himself, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans).
The character of Peggy Carter first appeared in 2011’sCaptain America: The First Avengerand made cameos as older versions of the character inCaptain America: The Winter SoldierandAnt-Man. Her 1940’s storyline, however, was picked back up in the tragically short-lived ABC series,Agent Carter.

Agent Carterpicked up in the years afterCaptain America: The First Avengerandfocusedon Atwell’sPeggy Carteras she balanced life as a secret agent as well as the struggles of a single woman in 1940’s America.

The shows first season originally aired in January of 2015, with the second season airing in January of 2016. Both seasons aired during the midseason breaks ofAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s third and fourth seasons respectively. The show garnered a positive critic response, however, viewership steadily decreased throughout the shows two seasons and was eventually canceled by ABC in May of 2016.
The sixth season ofAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.ends with some time travel back to the 1930’s. It is still unclear whether or not this is where we will find Peggy Carter or if more timeline shenanigans will come into play. It is more than likely the latter as Peggy Carter would only be around ten years old in 1930.

Rumors have been circling the web the last week ofAgent Carteractors reprising their roles inAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.Season 7 when actress Ming Na Wenuploaded a photoon Instagram showing personalized bikes gifted to the cast of Season 7. One bike had a tag with the name Enver Gjokaj…the actor who played Peggy Carter’s love interest Daniel Souza in the 2 seasons ofAgent Carter.
From the very first seasonAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.has been a bit of a bumpy ride. The show wasn’t able to land with critics and seemed to be put on the back burner along with Marvel’s other TV properties.

Disney grantingAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.a seventh and final season can be seen as kind of a blessing for the creative team behind the show. Having a natural and definitive end allows the creators to send off the characters on their own terms.
Agents Carterwas canceled before it got that opportunity. Hopefully, the inclusion of Hayley Atwell and otherAgent Cartercast members inAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.will give those characters a proper send-off as well.
