However, while addressing questions about why Gibson did not appear in the reboot, director George Miller, known for his masterful storytelling in theMad Maxuniverse, once drew comparisons between the casting change and opened up on why Mel Gibson was not a great fit for the venture.

When asked why theTom Hardy-led movie did not feature Mel Gibson in any role, directorGeorge Millerrevealed the reason behind his decision. Comparing the cameo with Sean Connery and Daniel Craig’s equation in theJames Bondfilm, Miller explained that such a transition could have potentially disrupted the movie’s immersion and confused the audience. He said,

“It’s like having Sean Connery appear in a Daniel Craig James Bond. It would throw you out of the movie, it would confuse the audience, and you’re trying your damnedest to actually keep people in the movie rather than throw them out.”

Furthermore, he emphasized his dedication to keeping viewers engaged and invested in the film, making it a priority to avoid anything that might detract from the experience. While Miller acknowledged the potential interest in working withMel Gibsonagain, he firmly stated that it would not be in the context of the $365 millionMad Maxfranchise. He said,

“Even though it would be interesting working with Mel again, certainly not in a Mad Max movie.”

Addressing criticisms from certain viewers who felt thatCharlize Theron’scharacter, Furiosa, played a more pivotal role inFury Roadthan Max himself, Miller attributed such concerns to the audience rather than his own approach. He asserted that maintaining the audience’s engagement was paramount, and any interpretation of character prominence rested with individual viewers.

He said during a media interaction,“That’s more their problem than mine.”And further added that Furiosa“could be”back in the future,“We’re in conversation about that now”.
