In a 2019 interview with NPR, she opened up about the night her mother killed her father in self-defense.

Charlize Theron Opened Up About the Horrific Night
In a 2019 interview withNPR,Charlize Theronopened up about the horrible night she witnessed her mother, Gerda Jacoba Aletta Maritz, fatally shoot her father, Charles Theron, in an act of self-defense. Recounting the traumatic events, she shared that she was just 15 when her heavily intoxicated father threatened to kill both her and her mother.
“My father was so drunk that he shouldn’t have been able to walk when he came into the house with a gun,”she shared. TheMad Maxstar shared that she and her mother desperately attempted to barricade the door to stop him from entering the room.

However, the situation escalated when her father“took a step back and just shot through the door three times.”And in an attempt to save herself and her daughter, Gerda Jacoba Aletta Maritz shot her husband.“But in self-defense, she ended the threat,”Theron recalled.
The Oscar-winning actress has shared that she is not “ashamed” to talk about such aspects of her life. However, she has acknowledged that it has left a profound impact on her as a person, as she opened up about her journey through struggles and trauma in a recent interview.

Charlize Theron on Advocating Against Gender-Based Violence
During a recent interview withTown & Country magazine,theMonsteractress was asked if the troubling moment has contributed to her commitment to combat violence against women.“It’s a simple correlation to make,”she said before explaining that it’s way more complex.
“But I think it’s way more complicated than having just one night of trauma in your life. With or without that, gender-based violence is so in your face in South Africa and globally.”

The actress emphasized that“growing up in a country under apartheid”also prompted her to bring awareness to gender-based violence.“I almost want to say more than just that one night in my life,”she said. The 48-year-old actress has been working to raise awareness of such issues through the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project. She founded the project in 2007 focused on empowering young people.
