Anne Hathaway Faced Criticism for Winning an Oscar in 2013

She had a relatively short amount of screen time (a combined 15 minutes) in the movie. But her portrayal of the tragic character Fantine was so powerful that it earned her the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress that year. But after winning the Best Supporting Actress award in 2013, theDark Watersstar faced severe criticism, with people questioning her personality and labeling her as “annoying.” When people win an Oscar, they usually get many calls. But for Hathaway, it was the opposite, as she recalled onHarper’s Bazaar:
“I had directors say to me, ‘I think you’re great. You’re perfect for this role, but I don’t know how audiences will accept you because of all this stuff, this baggage.”

But fortunately, she got a call from that one director, which saved her career.

Christopher Nolan’s Movie Saved Anne Hathaway’s Career
Even after getting an Academy Award, she got to face the same amount of hate from the directors, too. Hathaway’s life took a turn at that time when she got a call fromChristopher Nolan— the director with whom the actress had last worked onThe Dark Knight Rises,where she played Catwoman. And now, he called her to take her into space with his new movie. As she remembered in a conversation withHarper’s Bazaar:
“Once it was announced that I was doing Interstellar, thankfully the phone started ringing again.”
In the movieInterstellar, Hathaway portrays an astronaut who goes to space with Matthew McConaughey to save an endangered Earth. She described her role as “very serious, very prickly, very non-Hathaway, and, at the time, very necessary.”
The role proved worth it for the actress, asInterstellaris one of Hathaway’s most successful films, which earned over $672 million globally. She reportedly received a salary of more than $6 million to portray the role of NASA scientist Dr. Amelia Brand in the movie.
