Gwyneth Paltrow Initially RejectedShakespeare In LoveBefore Stealing It From Kate Winslet
During an interview with Variety, it was revealed byGwyneth Paltrowthat she initially rejected taking part in her iconic 1998 movie,Shakespeare In Love. The actress stated that there were a lot of iterations of this movie, one that originally starred Julia Roberts. After that version fell through, she was the first person who was asked but she ended up rejecting the role.
“The movie had many iterations,”she said.“Julia Roberts was going to do it for a long time, and then that version fell apart. It ended up in Miramax, and I was the first person they offered it to.”She wasn’t interested.“I was in the middle of a terrible breakup” —with Pitt— “and the idea of going to England and being far from home just seemed …”She trailed off.“I didn’t even read it. I was just like, ‘I can’t read anything right now. I’m having a really hard time.’”

Her reason for this was the fact that she was going through a really bad breakup and the idea of going away from her home and staying in London for shooting did not sound all too appeasing to her, So much so that she did not even read the script. So the production team ultimately moved on and tried to cast theTitanicactress, Kate Winslet to play the role instead, but that also fell through.
“I just couldn’t put it down,”she says. “It was perfect.”She had no choice but to agree to play Viola. One of her agents tried to talk her out of it.“This person said, ‘I think it’s more of a guy’s part.’ I was like, ‘Well, I want to do it.’”

Paltrow finally decided to read the script after some persuasion and immediately fell in love with it. She even mentioned that her agent tried to talk her out of it, saying that the role was much better suited for a man, but she did not care. She was in love with the script and needed to be part of this project. It would seem, however, that Paltrow risked a lot by taking on this project, more specifically, working with Harvey Weinstein.

Gwyneth Paltrow Talks About Her Awful Experiences With Harvey Weinstein
The rights toShakespeare In Lovewere owned by Miramax, Harvey Weinstein’s production company, which meant that Gwyneth Paltrow would have to work with the disgraced film producer. The actress revealed that while she worked on her 1996 movie,Emma, she had a few odd experiences with Weinstein, including an instance where he asked her to come to his hotel room, where he put his hands on her and asked her for a massage.
“I had one really uncomfortable, weird experience; then he was never inappropriate with me again in that way,” Paltrow went on, describing what it was like to deal with Weinstein,“He was a very difficult boss,”she said, “It was a fraught relationship. We would get in knock-down, drag-out fights. I remember once, my mother [Blythe Danner] walked in a room, and I was yelling at him about something. She was like, ‘Who was that on the phone?’”When Paltrow told her, she responded,“Oh, my goodness, good for you. Stand up for yourself.”
She then went on to describe many other instances with Weinstein where he acted in an unprofessional manner but made sure to clarify that he was never inappropriate with her in that way again. This truly shows what Paltrow risked when she joined the cast ofShakespeare In Love. It would seem, however, that this did not matter ask much to the actress as it did to be part of a project she truly found to be interesting and exceptional.
