In a world where many filmmakers play it safe, Abel Ferrara stands out as a true maverick. His willingness to tackle challenging and controversial subjects, his ability to coax raw and powerful performances from his actors, and his unique cinematic style all contribute to his greatness as a director.

Ferrara’s films are known for their unapologetic exploration of the human condition, often plumbing the depths of depravity and addiction. He forces us to confront the darkest aspects of humanity.

Abel Ferrara Opened up about Working with Shia LaBeouf

Filmmaker Abel Ferrara discussed his filmPadre Pio, which starsShia LaBeouf. During the making of the movie, the actor underwent a conversion to Catholicism.

“Shia LaBeouf believed in the project,” explains the director.

“He began to know Pio as he discovered his own Christianity. With this film Shia took the classic plunge into the dark, he jumped. He went to live in a monastery for months, he shared his time with his brothers. It was a very powerful discovery for him, for all of us.”

The movie, which follows Padre Pio from his early years until his first stigmata, was filmed in Puglia, Italy, in November 2021, where the actual events took place. Ferrara said:

Shia LaBeouf in Fury

“I didn’t know a lot about him. I don’t need to know about somebody’s work. I just go with my gut feeling man, especially with actors. I could feel it was right. I knew it was right. And he immediately jumped in his truck and took off for wherever, that mission outside of LA, with the Franciscan monks. And he just sat in the parking lot. Okay, finally they came out and said, ‘What are you doing?’ He said, ‘I’m gonna play Padre Pio. These guys, they’re not cynical, it’s not an attitude, so it’s like, ‘Okay, fine, come on inside.’ And then he began his new journey into Catholicism.”

Abel Ferrarawas more intrigued by Padre Pio’s personality than the controversies surrounding him.
