Martin Scorsese made headlines recently after he attended the Cannes Film Festival in France last week. The director went on a tour of Italy after attending the festival and allegedly met up with Pope Francis at the Vatican.

Martin Scorsese announced that he is going to make a movie about Jesus Christ

On Saturday,Martin Scorsesemet up with Pope Francis at the Vatican for a brief audience. After meeting up with the Pope, theWho’s That Knocking at My Doordirector made a shocking announcement at a Rome conference in the Vatican that he is going to be making his next movie about Jesus Christ himself. Scorsese announced,

“I have responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus, and I’m about to start making it.”

Antonio Spadaro, the editor of the religious periodical was allegedly also present in Scorsese’s meeting with the Pope and revealed, “How the Holy Father’s appeal ‘to let us see Jesus’ moved him.”

Martin Scorsese’s long-anticipated historical drama movie,Silencecame out in 2016, which the director allegedly wanted to make for almost 26 years. Back in 2013 in an interview with Deadline, Scorsese revealed why he was so obsessed withSilencefor such a long time. He said,

“As you get older, ideas go and come. Questions, answers, loss of the answer again, and more questions, and this is what really interests me. Yes, the Cinema and the people in my life and my family are most important, but ultimately as you get older, there’s got to be more. Much, much more…Silence is just something that I’m drawn to in that way. It’s been an obsession, it has to be done and now is the time to do it. It’s a strong, wonderful true story, a thriller in a way, but it deals with those questions.”

Despite Scorsese’s high expectations from the movie, it did not do too well at the box office. The movie only grossed $22 million against its budget of $50 million. Although it was a box office bomb,Silencereceived great reviews from critics and was even nominated for an Academy Award for best cinematography.
