Despite feeling drained and occasionally stumped, the auteur would continue working on several projects. Under a studio structure that prioritized business above creativity, these endeavors failed to generate jaw-dropping figures and subsequently, led to further disappointment. However, what served as the coup de grâce was 2004’sThe Aviator.

“The last two weeks of editing and mixing The Aviator, I had left the business from the stress [of dealing with studio executives]. I said if this is the way you have to make films, then I’m not going to do it anymore.”

With Grey and Pitt’s efforts, screenwriterWilliam Monahan came on board. This is how Martin Scorsese would find a reignited vigor for filmmaking. The director appreciated and was deeply moved by the script penned by Monahan. Despite feeling crushed by the Hollywood studio system, Scorsese was able to return to his craft. The film would be a grand success and earn the acclaimed auteur his first Oscar for Best Director.

In some way, Brad Pitt’s determination to make the film a reality and seeing it through development for almost two and a half years allowed Martin Scorsese to stumble upon a project that would revitalize his enthusiasm for filmmaking.
