Thandiwe Newton Recalled Working With Tom Cruise

During a 2020 interview with Vulture,Thandiwe Newtonrecalled working withTom Cruisein the second film in theMission Impossiblefranchise. She described her co-star as “really stressed”and“dominant”and claimed that Cruise“tries super hard”to be a nice person but ends up doing the contrary.

“He was a very dominant individual. He tries super hard to be a nice person,”she said. TheWestworldactress shared that theJack Reacherstar takes a lot of “pressure” and believes that he is the only one who can do his best at everything.

“And I think he has this sense that only he can do everything as best as it can be done,”Newton shared during her interview. She also shared that both of them were very frustrated with each other, and Cruise’s behavior toward her while filming just added to her“terror and insecurity”about her co-star.

She explains that the 60-year-old actor took it upon himself to demonstrate a scene by portraying her character. TheNorbitactress shared,“So we rehearsed, and they recorded it, and then he goes, ‘I’ll be you. You be me.'”She recalled calling director Jonathan Demme and explaining to him the “nightmare” she went through on the set ofMission: Impossible 2.

While she described her experience working with Tom Cruise as horrible, Thandiwe Newton didn’t seem to think the same of the Hollywood star as a person. She claimed that Cruise was not “horrible” but rather“really stressed.”TheReminiscencestar shared that she had the“most extraordinary time”while working on the 2000 action thriller and also shared who recommended her for the role of Nyah Nordoff.

Newton shared that Cruise’s ex-wife Nicole Kidman was the one who named her for the film.“It’s kind of nice if you can pick together. Nicole was a huge advocate for me,”she said. The 50-year-old actress also shared that herMission: Impossibleco-star was very “generous and open”when it came to talking about Scientology.

“He was very generous and open about sharing Scientological stuff. Christmas gifts would be something to do with Scientology,”Newton said. When asked why she did not return to theMission: Impossiblefranchise, she said that she was never asked to reprise her role as Nyah Nordoff.
