So finally, this came alive: Greta Gerwig’sBarbiefantasy comedy film has already arrived. We are not talking aboutBarbie in the 12 Dancing PrincessesorBarbie & the Diamond Castle.Instead, a real-life, live-action version featuring Margot Robbie as Barbie.

In 2019, Robbie was formally cast as Barbie after years of speculation about the movie starring the famous doll. The movie’s announcement was made in 2014, and Amy Schumer was initially cast as the lead. Schumer withdrew due to alleged scheduling conflicts and creative disagreements. Then, in 2017, it was reported that the Oscar-nominated actress was in discussions to play the lead.

When Margot Robbie Was Caught In An Awkward Situation

Margot Robbie gave the recognizable Barbie doll life inGreta Gerwig‘s film. Barbie has grown remarkably over the years and is arguably the most well-known and recognizable toy on the planet.

This Mattel doll has never lost its appeal and continues to be a timeless classic, much like her constantly changing fashion choices. So what persuaded the Australian actress to work on this particular project? She told Harper’s Bazaar:

“I didn’t want to pick up another script where I was the wife or the girlfriend — just a catalyst for the male storyline. It was uninspiring.”

Was Margot Robbie A Big ‘Barbie’ Fan As A Child?

In theBarbiemovie,Margot Robbieperformed tremendously as a fictional character, but the 33-year-old actress also acknowledged she has not always been a huge fan of the fashion doll. The Australian actress, who was raised in Queensland, informed PEOPLE:

“I didn’t personally have any [Barbie dolls] that I can recall. My sister did and I remember my cousin did. I would play with my cousins, but I wasn’t actually that much of a Barbie girl as a kid.”

Robbie responded when asked what kind of girl she was as a young child:

“I was more of a roll-around-in-the-mud kind of gal.”

Despite this, the actress was pleased to have made a significant contribution to Greta Gerwig’s movie as she explained:

“I’ll never forget, after talking to [writer-director] Greta Gerwig for years I sat down and read the script. There was a joke on page one and I was like ‘They’re never going to let us make this movie.’ But they did!”

In the meantime, Gerwig disclosed that her mother was not a big doll fan. As she stated to The AU Review:

“I grew up with a mom who didn’t love Barbie, which only made me more interested in Barbie. I got a lot of hand-me-down Barbies, so I got a lot of Barbies who looked like Kate McKinnon’s version, (where) it was like they didn’t have hair and their clothes were on backwards. So that Barbie is very close to my heart. When we signed on to write it, I went to the Mattel headquarters and they opened up all the archives and took me through everything from you know, 1959 until now, and their designers and the people who work there were just really fun to talk to and really interesting.”

Well, the movie earned over $1.34 billion worldwide and received praise from critics for its direction, themes, humor, and performances.

It is now Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing movie, the second-highest-grossing movie of 2023, the highest-grossing movie solely directed by a woman, and the 17th-highest-grossing movie of all time.

Barbieis slated for digital release on July 08, 2025.
