What did Iñaki Godoy share about the filming process of Netflix’s One Piece?

“You have this world where there’s Laos pirates and stretchy pirates, and you need to find a way to make that feel real human.”Godoy shares withTeen Vogueabout one of the primary challenges he faced while filming the role of Luffy in Netflix’sOne Piece. It was rather difficult to portray someone whose body behaves like rubber in a live-action film. However, Godoy was determined and shared how he tried to incorporate tiny elements from the anime, like how Luffy grabs his arm after punching, to sprinkle realism into the character he was playing.

“How can I translate this rubber-man into live-action? In those cases, I really used the anime and manga for reference and I literally tried to replicate the way this guy [Luffy] fights. I can see how this guy fights. Why wouldn’t I use that as a reference? When he throws a punch and he takes it back, he puts his hand on his bicep or his shoulder. So, if he does that, I should do that too, right? And when he’s about to throw a punch, sometimes he lifts up his leg. I just tried to look for those little details in the original product.”

Iñaki Godoy also shares his daily routine while filming and how it would completely exhaust him. He jokingly talks about how he would appear on the set in his pajamas because he was lazy. Nonetheless, the young actor completely nailed his role and garnered a lot of positive responses from his cast members and the audience.

“This is what the character is all about. And there are a lot of things that I did in that scene at the beginning that I changed. I did rehearsals for that scene with my director, and I think it worked out pretty well. But it definitely was a process, getting to that point of, oh, like, there’s this side of Luffy that… he is very kind and nice. He’s not just a ball of energy. He’s a ball of energy who listens.”

“I have never filmed a scene in the sky. Or when I filmed underwater, that was also really wild,”Godoy shares withTeen Vogueregarding some of the scenes which were rather challenging physically. He further continues,“I would open my eyes and there will be divers with cameras filming me! And I have to act! Underwater. Oh wow, that was something new! The underwater scene was physically hard because the water was freezing. But that was not the hardest scene to film.”

Iñaki Godoy portrayed Luffy’s love for adventure and expressed the character’s emotions so well that even the Mangaka of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda, can’t imagine anyone else who would be perfect for the part.
