Vinland Sagaseason 2 was one of the most anticipated anime of 2023. Season 1 finished airing in 2019, and the fans were eagerly waiting for the sequel. After four years of waiting, the anime came back with a second season, and as usual, it delivered one of the best shows of the year. Makoto Yukimura beautifully designed the characters and caught every minute detail to make it a masterpiece.
Even though the fans have loved the anime and the manga throughout, they will be shocked to hear that initially, the mangaka had different plans for the story. Yumikura had a different beginning to Thorfinn’s journey, but thanks to his editor, it was rejected, and he changed the beginning, and we got ourselves Valhalla.

The story of Thorfinn began with him fighting the Englishmen of England, and through the story’s development, he found himself working as a slave on a farm. But initially, there was no mention of any war or fighting, and the story directly began with Thorfinn being a slave. This idea was completely rejected by his editor, who pointed out that Vinland Saga was a story about Vikings and Vikings who love to fight. Beginning a story as a slave would immediately rejected by the fans.

Makoto Yukimura later mentioned his conversation with his editor in an interview withAnime Trending. He said,
“It’s a little complicated. When I first approached my editor to write the story of Vinland Saga, the story didn’t start where [Thorfinn] was fighting the English in England. Instead, I was planning on a story that started with him being a slave. So, the editor I spoke to at Kodansha said, “Well, that’s not going to sell! A story that starts from being a slave? I thought this story was about the Vikings and fighting, and you’re not going to go into that? How am I going to explain this to my editor-in-chief?” That was the first reaction that I received from my editor.”
The extra fight with the Englishmen helped to put extra weightage on Thorfinn’s character, which was a boon forVinland Saga, as well as for the fans who enjoyed it throughout.

Vinland Sagahas a total of 48 episodes, which is divided into two seasons equally. The manga has over 200 chapters and more than 5000 pages in total. MAPPA Studios was responsible for the amazing animation of the anime, and they looked after every minute detail from the manga.Vinland Sagais yet to announce the release date of the third season.
Makoto Yukimura is quite thankful to his editor since he hated the original concept ofVinland Saga. Due to the insights, Yukimura improved his manga and made a masterpiece. After the duo worked on it, they presented it to the editor-in-chief, who was quite impressed with the work and began serialization immediately. Yukimura might be the only person in the world who has benefited from his editor’s hatred.
