Roughly one year ago, it was announced by Warner Bros. Discovery that they had officially shelvedBatgirl, a movie focused on Barbara Gordon / Batgirl (played by Leslie Grace). The movie entered post-production and featured many Hollywood stars like J. K. Simmons, Jacob Scipio, Michael Keaton, and Brendan Fraser.

Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah recently opened up about the film and put the spotlight on Brendan Fraser, stating that his performance would’ve earned him an Oscar. As of now, actor Heath Ledger is the only comic book movie actor to earn an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The directors are very sure that Fraser was on Ledger’s level with his work as Ted Carson / Firefly in the canceled movie.

Brendan Fraser gave an Oscar-worthy performance inBatgirl
Directors of the canceledBatgirlmovie, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah recently appeared for an interview withYahoo! Entertainmentand revealed that actorBrendan Fraser, who played Ted Carson / Firefly, gave an Oscar-worthy performance in the film,
“People do love the Bat family: they love Batgirl, they love Gotham City, they love Michael Keaton and Brendan Fraser gave an Oscar-worthy performance in the movie. And the movie was supposed to be for streaming, which allows you freedoms that you don’t get in theaters. If it was a theatrical movie, we might have needed to have had bigger action sequences than we had. But we’ll never know! Hopefully, we can come back to DC and show what we can really do. It’s like unfinished business – we’ve got to prove ourselves one day.”

Actor Heath Ledger who played The Joker in 2008’sThe Dark Knight, is the only comic book movie actor to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. As per the directors of the canceled film, Fraser gave a performance that would’ve made him the second in this category.

The film was canceled in 2022
Due to cost-cutting, Warner Bros. Discovery announced in August 2022 that it had canceled the release ofBatgirl. The film, which was planned to be an HBO Max original, was in post-production at that point but it was still shelved. In Yahoo’s interview, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah also talked about the film’s budget of $90 million,
“It’s tough to say – the movie didn’t have a high budget, and I think that that’s a big part of it. We had to keep the budget low, so it was a very grounded story. But the fact that the budget wasn’t that high already would have helped it be a success.”

The film featured Leslie Grace as Batgirl, alongside J. K. Simmons, Jacob Scipio, and Michael Keaton. As of now, nothing has been announced but with James Gunn and Peter Safran setting up their new DC universe, fans can hope to see this character on the big screen one day.
