Uma Thurman has had her choice of movies from across genres, be it dramas or comedies, sci-fi, or superhero films. She is possibly best remembered for her role as Mia Wallace inPulp Fiction (1994), which brought her multiple nominations and instant global stardom. She also starred memorably as Poison Ivy inBatman & Robin (1997),playing the villain against George Clooney’s protagonist Batman.
She also starred in another superhero film, later in the 2000s. 2006 saw her get her shot to play the lead in a superhero film,My Super Ex-Girlfriend. She was drawn to it as she saw in it an opportunity to break into the comedy genre, and the movie received largely mixed reviews. Thurman spoke about the movie recently and how she felt while and after shooting it.

The premise ofMy Super Ex-Girlfriendwas based onUma Thurman‘s Jenny, who had encountered a radioactive meteorite when she was younger and been bestowed with the superhero powers of flight, superhuman strength and speed, and heightened senses, besides other powers like heat vision and super breath. Jenny assumes the role of the superhero G-Girl and exacts revenge on her poor boyfriend Matthew (Luke Wilson) after he breaks up with her owing to her being unnecessarily jealous.

Thurman was reluctant to call the movie a ‘chick flick’ and explained why.
“Guys love this movie. This movie is written by a man, made by a man. It’s sort of a male fantasy nightmare. So guys are loving the movie. But I throw that shark for every girl in America who ever wanted to throw a shark in her life.”
Thurman’s portrayal of G-Girl and Jenny came under strong scrutiny after the movie was screened. The movie received largely mixed reviews, but Thurman had thoroughly enjoyed working on it, as she revealed.

This was a superhero movie set in times way before Marvel or the DCU had come along and made the franchise their own. There were superhero and sci-fi movies in the industry, like theSpider-Manmovies and theStar Warsfranchise. In that light,My Super Ex-Girlfrienddid really well to come out as an original piece, which wasn’t even based on existing comic material.
“This character is just basically an uncensorable human being who just can’t control her responses and reactions and is pretty much just out of control. The idea that someone just doesn’t think before they speak and just blows a gasket at every turn was just immensely fun and interesting for me,”she had said earlier in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald.
Apparently, this is what attracted Thurman to the script of the movie: the character makeup of Jenny aka G-Girl.

Thurman also said that the movie was tenser than it seemed it was, especially the makeup of Jenny’s character.
“Here’s this girl like any of us … but she really is more tense than kryptonite. She’s just a real person. She wants to have a real life. She just deals with her responsibility of having superpowers, but she really resents it. I guess that’s the humor in the piece.”
Thurman’s attraction to the role was evident in the way she spoke about the humor attached to the script.
Currently, the actress and ex-model is slated to feature in the thrillerThe Kill Roomas an art dealer, and also as fictional US President Ellen Claremont inRed White and Royal Blue, a rom-com drama series.
