Matthew Vaughn recently revealed details about a proposed Superman trilogy that didn’t come to fruition. As James Gunn is set to bring a fresh take on the iconic hero in a fresh DC project, Superman: Legacy, it’s intriguing that another Superman venture was in the works. Gunn’s take on the superhero is said to stick to the original comic book portrayal, in contrast to Snyder’s version, which brought a darker tone to Henry Cavill’s Superman. Vaughn’s vision, however, focused more on elements of Krypton.

During an appearance on theHappy Sad Confused podcast, Vaughn spoke at length about his version of Superman alongside the famous comic book creator Mark Millar. Vaughn asserted the uniqueness of his planned trilogy, revealing that their main aim was to showcase something different from the old Superman narrative. Vaughn said, “our big idea was that Krypton doesn’t blow up.”

Matthew Vaughn Wanted Brainiac As The Villain
Mathew Vaughnalso delved into his choice of villains for his trilogy. He wanted Brainiac, Zod, and Lex Luthor. Eventually, Warner Bros. chose not to move ahead with the films.
Vaughn said (via YouTube):
“Mark and I sat down and plotted out a three-film trilogy, pitched it to Warner Bros. before ‘Man of Steel’… we pitched how to do a trilogy of Superman movies, and Warners said they weren’t interested. That’s as far as it went. I think Donner nailed it. ‘Wonder Woman’ worked very well because it was basically a Donner/Superman film but reimagined as Wonder Woman. I would’ve done a modern version of Donner. Our big idea was that Krypton doesn’t blow up. It does eventually. The dad was right, but he got his timing wrong. When Superman is grown up, suddenly there’s a mass exodus and all hell breaks loose. That was our main idea.”
Henry Cavill’sMan of Steelcompletely diverged from the lighthearted tone of the comics, and went for a more darker tone. Similarly, Vaughn’s idea of a Superman trilogy wanted to pay tribute to the traditional portrayal from the original comics. But Vaughn’s take on the character would have also significantly deviated from the source material.
