Game of Thronesis easily one of the biggest, most popular TV shows of all time. Starring Emilia Clarke, the show began in 2011 and ended its run in 2019 with eight seasons to its name. Known for its intricate plotlines, complex characters, and some eyebrows-raising relationships,Game of Thronesbuilt itself a huge fan following.

Another thing the show was known for was the unexpected and absolutely gut-wrenching deaths of some of our favorite characters. No one was guaranteed safety inGame of Thronesand that’s what kept the viewers on the edge of their seats. One such example is that of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Lena Headey’s characters which left many fans disappointed. However, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau defended the characters’ ending and stated that it was beautiful.

The opinions of the fans varied from individual to individual when it came to characters, Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey). The twins were in an incestuous affair with each other and even had a few children together. However, that was not even the most controversial part of their relationship.

In season eight, after Jaime finally reunites with Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), he leaves her behind to rescue his sister from the wrath ofEmilia Clarke’s character. Unfortunately, their reunion was shortlived and the duo succumbed to their deaths in each other’s arms as Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen destroyed the Red Keep.
While their deaths have received mixed reactions from fans, Coster-Waldau couldn’t have been happier with the characters’ ending. Even though fans would have loved to see Jaime and Brienne together at the end, Coster-Waldau believes Jaime dying in Cersei’s arms was the perfect ending for his character. A Reddit user found an interview of the actor talking about the deaths where he stated,

“It made complete sense for me. [Jaime] has always been dedicated to his sister. She was pregnant. She’s on her own. Of course he’s gonna go back and try to help her. It made complete sense to me. That ending, I thought was beautiful, romantic. I was quite sure a lot of people would be very upset that he didn’t stay with…Brienne…but I thought it was beautiful.”
What are your thoughts on Jaime and Cersei’s ending? Should he have gotten his happily ever after with Brienne or was it absolutely fitting for his character to go back to his sister?

Lena Headey Would Beg to Differ
While Coster-Waldau was all for the ending, his on-screen sister and ex-lover does not seem to share the same opinion. Talking to The Observer, Headey stated that whenever she gets the chance to sit down with the show’s writers she will tell them that Cersei wanted a“better death.”
Headey went on to state that she was gutted with how her character’s story ended but understood that there was no way the show could’ve pleased everyone.
“Obviously you dream of your death. You could go in any way on that show. So I was kind of gutted. But I just think they couldn’t have pleased everyone. No matter what they did, I think there was going to be some big comedown from the climb.”
The actress continued that her time on the show was“amazing”but it was now time to“move on”adding that she is still in touch with her co-stars who are all on a giant WhatsApp group together.
