James Gunn has previously revealed that Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon in Marvel Studios’Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3is “the secret protagonist” and the plot will heavily focus on the tough mercenary’s origin story, which got fans wondering if the beloved character will perish in the upcoming movie.

The heavy tone of the film has sent fans on a whirlwind of assumptions that something wild and depressing would happen to Rocket Raccoon. Gunn also confirmed that he wanted to bring a conclusion to Rocket’s story, so does it mean the character will ultimately die?

James Gunn Responds To Rocket Raccoon’s Possible Death
On hisInstagramaccount, James Gunn addressed some comments from fans pertaining to the possible demise of Rocket Raccoon. Although he did not directly answer some queries, he gave hints as to the character’s fate.
A user expressed their hope of Rocket dying in the movie, to which the director only replied with a wide-eyed emoji. Another commenter said, “About to piss me off when rocket dies (if he does) they don’t need to die, send em off the world for a bit. Simple,” to which Gunn replied:

“No one said he was going to die but that’s not how stories work.”
Fans worried reaction to Rocket’s emotional storyline can be attributed to the director’s statement regarding the movie’s script. In his interview withEW, Gunn revealed:

“For Guardians 3, the script has basically been written for a long time. I’ve been playing with it in little ways over the years, but it’s basically stayed the same since three years ago. It’s pretty heavy actually. It’s a heavier story, so it’s an emotional process to go through.”
The same adjective was used by Nebula actress Karen Gillan after she read the script. The Scottish star confessed viaCollider:

“There was full tears. It’s incredible, I think it’s James’ strongest work yet with the Guardians, and it’s just brilliant. It’s brilliant, and it’s emotional, and it’s funny, and it’s all of those things that you want.”
These corroborating statements are only proof that fans are going to have a wild and emotional ride withGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and because Rocket Raccoon is the central character here, the assumptions only make sense.

Will Rocket Raccoon Die InGOTG Vol. 3?
Since the third movie will serve as the conclusion to the epic intergalactic saga, it is only fair to say that it might end on a sad note. Killing off Rocket Raccoon is a plausible choice for Gunn. Because everyone claimed how devastating and heart-wrenching the film is, it only serves as a clue that someone is not going to make it to the end.
Dave Bautista, who plays Drax the Destroyer, also confirmed his Marvel exit after Volume 3. The actor has expressed his sentiments on leaving the character behind for good, and that could also mean Drax would possibly bite the dust.
Volume 3 will be the final installment in this iteration of theGuardians of the Galaxyepic saga, and while many fans wish Rocket to survive, his fate has already been written.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3will arrive in theaters on July 16, 2025.
