Speaking with Chris Evans duringVariety’sActor on Actorsession, Scarlett Johansson spoke about two of her 2019 acclaimed projects that earned her Oscar nods. Appearing in Noah Baumbach’s romance dramaMarriage Story, and in Taika Waititi’s satiricalJojo Rabbit,the actress made an impact in the entertainment industry.
However, recalling her work onMarriage Storyalongside Adam Driver, Johansson mentioned how she was utterly shocked to get a call from the writer. Apparently,Scarlett Johanssonand theBarbiewriter Baumbach had a scuffle in the past, after the actress dropped out of a project because it didn’t feel right.

“Probably 10 years ago, Noah and I tried to work on something else together. We kind of developed for a little bit, and then it didn’t end up being right, and by the time it was ready to shoot, I was kind of past it. It wasn’t the right fit…you feel like maybe something didn’t work out professionally and you’re like: ‘Well, there goes that relationship.’”
Sharing the incident that almost toppled their friendship, Scarlett Johansson mentioned she was thus shocked to get a call from Noah Baumbach, years later forMarriage Story.

Scarlett Johansson’s Driving Force To Work OnMarriage Story
Scarlett Johansson revealed how she was highly doubtful of her opportunity to work with theBarbiewriter, after previously rejecting one of his projects in development. However, after sharing the incident onVariety’ssession,Chris Evansasked the actress about what drove her to accept the 2019 project, out of the blue.
“I was so surprised when he called me years later to meet and talk about something. It totally came out of the blue. I met with him in New York, and it was like no time had passed at all. We kind of shifted right into this moment where he pitched me this story a little bit, and I myself was actually in the middle of going through a divorce. It was such a strange coincidence.”

Apart from being happy to revive her friendship and professional relationship withNoah Baumbach, Scarlett Johansson also found a resemblance between the movie’s storyline and her personal life. Discussing how the similarities were uncanny, Johansson thus admitted accepting the project without thinking twice.
