Matt Rife has become quite the comedian in recent years. The comedian has managed to score quite a number of specials with Netflix, but the journey to get there has not been without its fair share of challenges.
In 2016, tweets by the then-up-and-coming resurfaced, containing some problematic humor that could have tanked the young artist’s entire career. Tweets using objectionable language and slang landed the artist in a lot of trouble, causing him to delete set tweets, to little avail.

What was the controversy regarding Matt Rife?
Twitter can be a dangerous place to tread, especially if one has aspirations of making it big. While most people usually just tweet and forget, it is often that momentary lapses in judgment could come to ruin the most important days of your life. It happened with Kevin Hart. It happened with James Gunn. And it happened with Matt Rife.
Before the artist was signing deals with big names like Netflix,Tweetsfrom the actor’s Twitter feed began to resurface on the platform in 2016. In these tweets, Rife made some objectionable comments about the LGBTQ community and also used the ‘n’ word, causing a number of users on the platform to call him out. However, the situation did not escalate to cause the artist some trouble, as he would go on to sign multiple specials with Netflix with his latest one, Natural Selection out on Netflix as of August 08, 2025.

As a comedian, the two chief influences on Rife’s work have been Dave Chapelle and Ricky Gervais. These comedians are known for their take on woke politics and what is considered problematic subject matter. Similar criticisms were leveled at both comedians, who shrugged it off and moved along with their very successful comedy careers, which seems like would be the case for a talented and bold individual like Matt Rife
