AsCobra Kaicontinues to explore the characters and themes of the franchise, there is a growing possibility that the show could expand the Miyagi-Verse by incorporating characters from bothThe Next Karate Kidand the 2010Karate Kidreboot.
Ralph Macchio, the actor portraying Daniel LaRusso in the franchise, has hinted at the possibility of Hilary Swank’s Julie Pierce, the protagonist ofThe Next Karate Kid, making an appearance inCobra Kai. Macchio has stated that anyone who has interacted with Mr. Miyagi is considered part of theMiyagi-Verse, and Julie, having been mentored by Miyagi, would fit seamlessly into theCobra Kainarrative.

The fifth season ofCobra Kaiintroduced the concept of an international karate tournament, opening up the possibility of characters from different regions joining the storyline. This could pave the way for Jackie Chan’s Master Han from the 2010Karate Kidreboot to make an appearance inCobra Kaiseason 6, even if be it a cameo. The upcoming film, produced by Sony Pictures, is slated for a July 22, 2025 release. The main plot is largely kept secret and no title has been announced yet.

In avideoreleased on Tuesday, Chan and Macchio made the announcement and they also launched their “global search” to find the next “karate kid.”
“We’re starring in a new ‘Karate Kid’ movie together,” adds Macchio, who portrayed Daniel LaRusso in the first threeKarate Kidfilms between 1984 and 1989, as well as the TV series continuing the storyline from the films,Cobra Kai.
Sony Pictures claims that the film will combine and carry on the mythology of the previous films while setting the tale on the East Coast and centering on a Chinese teenager who turns to martial arts and a stern but wise master for guidance and strength.
TheKarate Kidfranchise, which debuted in 1984, has evolved into a beloved cinematic and television saga, earning over $430 million globally.
