Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio thought he was on the brink of death after he could not get out of deep water during a work trip. The high-profile actor, best known for his roles inTitanic,The Revenant, andThe Great Gatsby, almost lost his life and career if not for a close friend who rescued him.
Aside from nearly having an airplane engine exploding on his face and a parachute failing to function while up in the sky, DiCaprio seems to have the omen of bad luck on his tail. His latest near-death experience was when he was scuba diving with fellow actor Edward Norton.

Edward Norton Rescued Leonardo DiCaprio During A Scuba Diving Escapade
Appearing inThe Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,Fight ClubactorEdward Nortonrevealed he once rescuedLeonardo DiCapriofrom nearly sinking to the depths of the Galapagos Islands:
“Leo’s like a very old friend of mine, and our friendship is totally based in our mutual passion for environmental advocacy and climate change work. We’ve taken a lot of trips together, to amazing places. We’ve gone diving together, and gone to see a lot of incredible natural wonders together.”
Norton described DiCaprio as addicted to his devices, which almost cost the actor’s life:
“We were on a diving trip in the Galapagos Islands, and we were with other friends, and we were with the oceanographer Sylvia Earle and Fisher Stevens… Leo, I love him, but he’s very addicted to devices and things like that.”
Engrossed with his newly purchased camera and all the incredible things living under the ocean, DiCaprio was not aware of the limited time they had:
“Leo has this crappy little aftermarket snapshot digital camera in some sort of housing, but he’s obsessed, he’s underwater like this on it all the time. So, we’re in the water, and after a while, I’m looking around and I realize he’s just not there. He’s not around, and I think to myself ‘I know Leo, I know how he is with his devices, he’s probably got his face in that camera and he’s gone way off, following these things.’”
Norton was able to find DiCaprio lurking somewhere, signaling to him that he is almost running out of oxygen:
“I give [my oxygen tank] to him. We did the buddy breathe thing and we go up, and he’s falling all over me, like ‘Buddy, buddy, you saved my life, you saved me.’ It didn’t seem dramatic to me, I think it did to him.”
Despite his unluckiness, Leonardo DiCaprio is fortunate enough to have a thoughtful and concerned friend who is willing to sacrifice his own oxygen tank to save the actor’s life.

Edward Norton Is Committed To The Service Of Humanity
Edward Norton’s act of bravery and compassion did not go unnoticed. TheMotherless Brooklynstar toldUS Weeklyin an exclusive interview during the 8th Annual Breakthrough Prize event at Nasa Ames Research Center what he thinks about these kinds of selfless acts:
“I think that’s exactly what these kinds of evenings are about. I think they’re celebrating people who have done — committed themselves to service of other people.”
The Grand Budapest Hotelstar noted that the public mostly pours their attention on celebrities and not on people who actually work for the betterment of society:
“I think in the context of this evening, I’d say, we pay a lot of attention to people who make movies and music and play sports. I think kids tend to look up disproportionately to people who do those things and not enough to their teachers and to the people who are really, actually achieving landmark work that’s gonna affect people for generations.”
Indeed, Norton’s passion for environmental advocacies makes it natural for him to be compassionate to other people and to dedicate his life to the service of humanity.
